Soft Baroque x Uppercut

Ghost Kitchen takes the 1926 Frankfurt Kitchen by Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky - often regarded as the first streamlined, standardized built-in kitchen - as a point of departure, responding to the homogenization that has since come to define modern kitchen design. Conceived by Soft Baroque as a reaction against the serial logic of white melamine chipboard, standard 60 cm units, and flattened domestic uniformity, the installation seeks to re-energize and reimagine these conventions through carved reliefs, sculptural new pieces, and a setting that combines built-in modules, a kitchen table, and a fire pit. Installed within a strangely proportioned, sunken room that evokes a subterranean back-of-house workspace, the project also reflects on the idea of the “ghost kitchen” itself - spaces that appear public-facing but operate invisibly - drawing a parallel to contemporary design practice, where objects are produced and distributed from the studio alongside a carefully constructed online presence.
