L’ETÀ DEI METALLI

“L’ETÀ DEI METALLI” (The Age of Metals) is an exhibition dedicated to the work of the artist, poet, architect and designer Alessandro Mendini, running from 4 April to 20 May 2023 at the M77 Gallery (via Mecenate 77). Curated by Stephan Hamel and with Francesca Alfano Miglietti also participating in the project, the exhibition was conceived by Giuseppe Lezzi and Emanuela Baccaro of M77 Gallery as a new revelation of the eclectic architect and theorist. Metal is the common denominator describing the kaleidoscopic activities of an artist who had a profound impact on the history of international design and art. Alessandro Mendini wanted to instil spirit into objects because an object is never a mere instrument, but something that establishes close relationships with a person’s psyche, fragility and uncertainties, working through attitudes shaped by ritual and ceremony. For Mendini, every object is a symbol, a fetish, fruit of utopias and loves, and the energy that it expresses is a story that gives identity to the silent shapes of things, as if every object reflected its history through its structure, surfaces, colours and materials.

About

M77 GALLERY

M77 opened in 2014 with the purpose to make room for new ideas in Milan’s contemporary art scene. Offering its 1000 m2 space as a platform for dialogue and a place for ambitious projects, M77 hosts exhibitions with a strong site-specific approach and curatorial vision. The core mission of the gallery is to foster a reputable and varied roster of artists by bringing their ideas and vision to fruition and establish itself exponentially as a cultural epicenter by hosting book presentations, talks, performances and art-related events within its exhibition program to further engage its public and collectors. M77 strives to expand its International presence through its participation in the best art fairs world-wide. Gradually over the last five years, the gallery has embarked and expanded on a clear exhibition program focused on very personal declinations of the conceptual attitude, often preferring to shed light on underrepresented mid-career international artists and on the more experimental, less known aspects of the production of renowned Post-War Italian Masters. M77 currently represents Emilio Isgrò, Nino Migliori, Grazia Varisco, Braco Dimitrijević, the Estate of Maria Lai, Avish Khebrehzadeh, Kendell Geers, Alberto Biasi, Valentino Vago, Archives Charlotte Perriand, Kaarina Kaikkonen and Mat Collishaw. Among the gallery’s recent highlights we proudly mention: Alberto Biasi’s solo show, “The Visibility of the Invisible”, a comprehensive monumental exhibition focused on Biasi’s pioneering environments from the 1960s and ‘70s; Kendell Geers’ installation “Hanging Piece” (1993) where more than 500 bricks were hung to create an impactful experience, enhanced by a mirroring floor, for his solo show OrnAmenTu’EtKriMen; finally, our debut at Paris+ par ArtBasel | Sites with a striking installation by Op and Kinetic art pioneer Grazia Varisco.
