Yuki Hayama

Pierre Marie Giraud is pleased to announce a new exhibition by Yuki Hayama, starting on May 23 and running until June 22, 2024.

Yuki Hayama is an artist originating from Arita, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, which has been producing porcelain since the early 17th century. Yuki Hayama began his journey in a local workshop at a young age, where he acquired the ancestral knowledge and techniques of the region. At the age of 23, he established his own kiln, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary elements.

His unique style is rooted in his fascination with mythology, history, and tradition, and his out-of-this-century dedication to long hours of painstakingly detailed hand painting. His intricate compositions of glaze are applied with a brush, without a preliminary drawing or draft, directly onto the ceramic. Out of the five colors of traditional hand-ground glazes, the artist, through layering, can achieve more than 72 colors.

Hayama's love for literature shows in his art. Tales and stories unfold on his bowls, vases, and plates. Five thousand years of ceramic tradition and the grand narrative of natural history are to be found within the intricate patterns of his porcelains. His artworks bear his unmistakable signature—a fusion of the past, present, tradition, and innovation.
