J. Lohmann Gallery is pleased to present Ahryun Lee: Hoppy Marvels in collaboration with USM Modular Furniture. Ahryun Lee's new collection, Hoppy Marvels, is a refined celebration of the whimsical. She beckons viewers into a vibrant, otherworldly realm where the playful spirits of animals spring to life through tactile and colorful ceramic forms. This new body of work is a masterful culmination of Lee's established visual style that centers on a fantastical reimagining of animals to cultivate joy and wonder for the natural world.
Lee's expansive imagination drives her collection in every detail, from carefully chosen color combinations reminiscent of childhood candy to layered textures pleasing to both touch and eye. Her abstracted animals interact with both viewer and each other, embodying movement especially when paired together. Each creation possesses a unique personality expressed through pose rather than facial features, inviting interaction in a multi-sensory world of her own creation.
As a renowned contemporary ceramic artist, Ahryun Lee is distinguished for her unique visual style of bold colors paired with striking textures in her abstracted, often playful, forms. This style continuously evolves around themes of joy influenced by childhood nostalgia and her appreciation of the world around her. Lee hopes her viewer will "Hop into a world of color and joy, where every twist and turn of playful beings brings a burst of optimism and wonder."
She explores creative possibilities by embracing a global perspective between East and West, combining traditional Korean ceramic techniques with contemporary motifs. Born in Seoul, South Korea in 1989, Lee now resides and works in Bavaria, Germany. She graduated from Seoul National University (2011) and Royal College of Art in the UK (2016), developing a distinctive visual vocabulary alongside refined craftsmanship.
Lee has gained international attention, with work exhibited at prominent shows including Design Miami, The Salon Art + Design, Salone del Mobile, and many other exhibitions across the USA, Europe, Middle East, and South Korea. She has collaborated with Céline London and recently worked with Dolce & Gabbana under their Generation Designers project.
Through her original artistic expression, Lee aims to nurture an appreciation for the animal kingdom by deepening our connection to the natural world through fresh reinterpretation, inviting viewers into an otherworldly realm where each sculpture tells its own story and every color ignites the imagination.
