Experience Condalia, a solo exhibition of new lighting and ceramic works by Los Angeles-based artist Adam D. Miller (b. 1982), on view now in The Future Perfect’s New York gallery.
Taking its name from a plant native to the Yucca desert where Adam D. Miller and his family make their home, Condalia is a personal statement from an artist who is acutely attuned to his network of inspiration and various points of reference. This body of work reflects the graphic and expressive aesthetic that is commonly associated with Miller’s artist-run Los Angeles gallery The Pit, which has found historical parallels in American art movements like the Bay Area Funk Artists, Chicago Imagists, and 1980s Neo-expressionists. A recurring source of inspiration for Miller is Ultraman, a Japanese science fiction television franchise launched in the late 1960s, which holds special significance for his family. The vase “Ultraman and Ultraboys in the Mojave” depicts Miller and his two children as characters in the Ultraman universe among desert imagery. “It is the key that holds Condalia together,” says Miller, “It provides the context for the rest of the show.”
