The inaugural solo exhibition at STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN in New York is aptly titled INIZIO (‘to start’), exploring our perception of place, origin, and absence.
Balzano’s first US solo exhibition will present two new collections, "Inizio" and "Loci," rooted in simplicity, craftsmanship, and the use of noble materials. The "Inizio" series, features eight dark Hemlock Wood pieces that question the duality of monumentality and absence, musing on the fragility of nature in an ever-innovating world. The "Loci" series presents six cases with delicate and monolithic characters made from soft white, green, and pink Onyx, bronze, copper, and polished brass, considering how we protect what is most dear to us in constructing our personal and collective identities.
The limited-edition works will be dramatically showcased within an installation design by STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN gallerists Nacho Polo and Robert Onuska. Drawing inspiration from the Gilded Age, the gallery will be draped entirely in drop cloth, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a grand estate left vacant at the end of summer, evoking both a bygone era and the emergence of something new.
The exhibition will be on view from September 4, 2024 to October 4, 2024.
