R & Company and BassamFellows are pleased to present two exhibitions that explore the work of designers Craig Bassam and Scott Fellows: Carve, Curve, Cane and Modern in Your Life. The programs examine BassamFellows’ ongoing dialogue with the history of Modernist furniture, art, and architecture, offering a rare opportunity to experience their work alongside iconic pieces by modernist designers.
The first part of the exhibition, Carve, Curve, Cane, opens at R & Company on June 22nd and surveys the rich materiality of BassamFellows’ work. The second installation opens on July 9th at the BassamFellows headquarters in Ridgefield, Connecticut, and is curated by Erica Barrish and R & Company’s Director of Museum Relations, James Zemaitis.
Carve, Curve, Cane assembles some of BassamFellows’ most recent work, with an emphasis on geometry and material innovation. Carving is highlighted through their Plaza series of carved solid marble pieces, the Sling Club Chair, forged out of solid wood with tubular steel and leather, and the Brutus and Mantis chairs – both sculpted from solid wood. The former piece is elegantly finished with Vienna cane. Curves are realized in the bent tubular steel of BassamFellows’ Geometric series.
The exhibition is further punctuated by the graphic, spectral work of contemporary Indian artist, Prabhavathi Meppayil, and historic pieces by Jean Arp. Meppayil employs traditional jewelry-making techniques to form impressions on metallic surfaces, reinterpreting classic, minimalist grid patterns with unique materials and methods. For Arp, biomorphic forms in bronze prove sensual and ambiguous, yet are strongly evocative of nature.
