Summer Group Show

HB381 is pleased to announce its summer show, a group exhibition by five contemporary female artists working in glass. In hot shops and studios across Sweden and Denmark, these five sculptors have distinguished themselves for their facility with the techniques of blown glass, cast molten forms, and etched and chiseled surfaces. Glass functions as a multivalent substance which transmutes opaque sand into translucent imagery at once recognizable yet elusive; in their hands, this rich medium conveys enigma, utopian histories, baroque sensibilities, and bodily fragility.

Stine Bidstrup (Danish, b. 1982) explores optical phenomena and theories of chaos and utopia, creating jagged artificial landscapes and architectural models from mouth-blown colored glass, detailed with digitally printed patterns.

Lene Bødker (Danish, b. 1958) mixes conceptual links to philosophy and biology with rigorous and near-forgotten craft techniques, revealing the inherent connection between glass and nature.

Frida Fjellman (Swedish, b. 1971), a Stockholm-based multi-disciplinary artist, diverges from traditional Nordic minimalism with her fantastical, gem-like glass installations, where colored crystals create spectacles of light.

Hanna Hansdotter (Swedish, b. 1984) creates mold-blown glass sculptures where soft forms are interrupted by hard casting lines, blending traditional craftsmanship with a vibrant, punk-inspired aesthetic.

Maria Koshenkova (Russian-Danish, b. 1981) produces amorphous glass and steel sculptures which address the human condition and the fragility of the body through notions of corporeality, tenderness, and care.
