Los Angeles-based Swiss artist Carmen D'Apollonio presents a new body of work in her upcoming solo exhibition at Friedman Benda New York, debuting her recent explorations in glass.
This ambitious new body of work expands her signature ludic spirit by engaging new materials and dimensionality, resulting in visually dynamic, illuminated sculptural lamps that function as personified characters staging inventive performances throughout the gallery. The introduction of expressive, sculpted glass lampshades marks a pivotal evolution, creating interplay between light, shadow, form, and matter, revealing what was previously obscured behind linen shades and opening fresh narrative possibilities. The emotionally charged works with raw, confessional titles, invite empathy and dialogue.
