Dobrinka Salzman Gallery is pleased to present, PICCOLOS, a solo exhibition of new work by ceramic artist Jeremy Anderson.
Anderson’s sculptural vessels, which he calls “Piccolos,” are anthropomorphic creatures hand-assembled from wheel-thrown elements in stoneware. The forms arise organically from the clay, built from the ground up allowing each character to grow. Anderson describes the small circular openings as the point of origin for each piece’s individual personality.
The new collection of work on view with Dobrinka Salzman are a continuation of the forms Anderson has become known for. The artist takes pleasure in the play and dialog the different shapes have together. They are symbolic of our interactions as humans and the beauty of our differences.
For many of the vessels, an emphasis is placed on those shapes that form from the hand-painted lines with lustre, or a neutral palette of fins highlighted by light and shadow. The reverberating lines and fins emanating from the first single gesture create unexpected shapes and patterns. This exploration of materials and textures is an opportunity for Anderson to “dress up” his works and to further the narrative of how we present ourselves to the world.
