For the past five years, Bossa has been immersed in the Hidden Treasures project—a meticulous exploration of the overlooked yet pivotal companies that shaped Brazilian design history. Through extensive research of old magazines, catalogs, and newspapers, we’ve unearthed stories on the verge of being forgotten. These narratives shed light on the creative ecosystems—stores, makers, and local scenes—that played vital roles in Brazil’s modern design movement.
While the pioneers will always hold their rightful place, Hidden Treasures shifts focus to the networks and ideas that sustained and amplified their success. It delves into how creative hubs, cultural movements, and economic forces intersected to shape Brazil’s design landscape, illustrating a dynamic confluence of ambition, innovation, and historical context. The project then transitions to the second generation of designers—those inspired by the pioneers—unfolding a pivotal moment when industry and design converged.
The late 1960s, unlike the radical experimentation seen elsewhere, was marked by a pragmatic approach to design. Modern aesthetics became accessible to Brazil's upper-middle class as companies invested in industrial growth, worker training, and expanding their operations across São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. This industrialization brought modern design into everyday life, blending functionality with aspiration.
After five years of research and acquisition, more than 160 models have been cataloged, with 26 pieces now presented in our New York gallery. The complete selection, along with its historical documentation, is available online, showcasing the depth of Brazil's modern design heritage and Bossa's commitment to sharing this knowledge with our community.
