A dynamic group of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) female-identified designers and artists will participate in a highly anticipated opening of "Upon Further Reflection," an exhibition intended to give a platform to the often underlooked yet prolific community. This unique showcase will open its doors to the public at the 3.1 Phillip Lim store on May 20, 2023 during NYCxDESIGN. "Upon Further Reflection" is co-curated by Lora Appleton, founder of the Female Design Council and Andrea Hill, founder of Tortuga Forma, in partnership with the Asian American Pacific Islander Design Alliance (AAPIDA), and features the diversity within the AAPI community and the differences and beauty within it. The exhibition aims to celebrate and amplify the talent and contributions of both lauded and emerging artists & designers of all backgrounds. The designers were invited to participate to both challenge and address the ideas of reflection through surface exploration, materiality, and self discovery. This charged concept of mirroring and reflection is of endless fascination, and especially for the AAPI community, who has struggled to be seen within the historically white-centric United States of America. The result is an extraordinary multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring an array of never-before-seen pieces in a diverse range of artistic mediums, including furniture, sculpture, installation, painting, and ceramic objects, that invites viewers to ponder and question their own reflections.
