Object Permanence, co-curated by Leah Ring of Another Human and Holland Denvir of Denvir Enterprises, is an exhibition series created to showcase the talent of LA artists and designers. Designers are invited to create a work based on a prompt. Now in its fifth year, Edition 9 of Object Permanence will bring together ten designers asked to interpret a cookie jar for a one night event taking place on Friday, June 21st from 7-10 PM at the HUBBAHUBBA Showroom at 824 S Los Angeles St, Suite 400.
The exhibition will kick off Los Angeles Design Weekend, a brand-new design festival hosting a weekend-long series of neighborhood-centric events in Downtown Los Angeles and the surrounding Northeast neighborhoods. Each iteration of Object Permanence revolves around individual interpretations of a specific prompt, keeping the brief loose and allowing participants the freedom to express their vision and highlight their particular expertise in a broad range of materials. In the past, designers have been tasked with reimagining piggy banks, ping pong paddles, clocks, picnic baskets, and more. This year, the designers were asked to create a cookie jar, a decorative yet functional object steeped in nostalgia. A cookie jar may conjure memories of home or visiting a grandparent. It can provide a sense of joy, and bring out the playful childlike side in everyone. Each artist will bring their unique vision to the household staple.
Object Permanence was founded by Leah Ring of Another Human and Holland Denvir of Denvir Enterprises, as a means to bridge the gap between LA's various creative industries, offering a space to exchange ideas, build connections, broaden communities, and foster open dialogue across zip codes. Object Permanence seeks to offer a voice to up-and-coming designers by highlighting their work alongside that of more well established studios. After three successful exhibitions in Los Angeles, Object Permanence expanded to a new geographic territory with Edition 4, which was hosted in New York at the 1stdibs gallery, providing a platform for designers to share their work and build community, wherever that may be.When Edition 5 of Object Permanence was postponed due to the global health pandemic, founders Ring and Holland Denvir organized a charity auction featuring work by Object Permanence Alumni to raise money for the LA Food Bank. Through the sale of the objects exhibited and the generosity of participating artists, Object Permanence has donated over $10,500 to date for organizations including LA Food Bank, Black Art Futures Fund, Common Cause and Downtown Women’s Center.
