A long weekend in Rome felt energizing and recalibrating thanks to the EDITION’s excellent new hotel in Rome, and its proximity to the best in the city.

Opened in 2023, the EDITION’s first Italian property is located on Via Veneto, a street famous for its prominence in the iconic film La Dolce Vita. Designed by Cesare Pascoletti in collaboration with the renowned architect Marcello Piacentini, The hotel exemplifies Italian Rationalist architecture, housed in a former 1940s bank building with an imposing marble facade softened by ivy cascading down the exterior. The dramatic central staircase, made of rare cipollino marble sourced from the Apuane quarries, showcases the hotel's balance of sober, streamlined design with luxurious materials. Throughout the building, original features are preserved, including the central courtyards, statues, and lamps.

Anima, the hotel's signature restaurant, features a lush garden that serves as a piazza and dining area. The space combines indoor and outdoor elements with over 400 plants and climbing jasmine embracing the façade creating the ambiance of a traditional Roman garden. Anima offers relaxed outdoor seating with an all-day terrace serving light dishes and a dinner menu, complemented by a modernist cocktail list inspired by Mediterranean gardens. I recommend the focaccia, always, along with beef tartar, and fusillone pasta with Ischian rabbit ragu.

The dramatic lobby features textured travertine floors and ceilings, 22 feet high. The space includes seating arrangements with custom white fabric sofas, coffee tables inspired by Manuel Coltri, petrified wood side tables, and standing lamps. The Lobby embodies EDITION's dynamic spirit, providing a place to relax, chat, and enjoy activities like pool on a custom-made table.

Accessible through the lobby are two bars: the Punch Room, an award-winning speakeasy-inspired bar, and Jade Bar, a more intimate space enveloped in monochromatic emerald green. The spacious Punch Room features a dark walnut wood bar, a marble fireplace, and leather furniture reminiscent of a gentleman’s wood-paneled library.

The guestroom interiors reflect its exterior stature, but as is typical of EDITION properties, it is minimalist and warm with walnut walls peppered with Italian portrait paintings, and bespoke furniture, both streamlined and cozy. After a day of seeing all the sights Rome offers, it is a place where the body—and the eye—can truly rest.

Arguably, one of the best reason to visit the hotel in warm weather, is the exceptional roof. With it’s spa-like touches, and views across Rome, hours can be spent lounging and swimming, or having a drink at the bar counter. Designed by the hotel’s founder, Ian Schrager, the wonderful use of repetition creates echoes within the grand spaces, adding an element of surprise when you walk into each room. The gridded art, the floor-to-ceiling drapes, and the use of arches expand the spaces, almost to a surreal extent.

The location is prime. Just moments from Villa Borghese Park and the stunning Galleria Borghese Museum, the neighborhood is partially residential and quiet, with some offices, hotels, and excellent vintage shops. It is less than a 15-minute walk from the Spanish Steps in one direction and 13 minutes from the Trevi Fountain in another. It is far enough away from the heavy summer crowds to feel as if you are in a private, modernist villa, but yet close enough to feel included.
