The uniqueness of the architecture, not the typical sugar-cube homes typical of Greek islands, felt as though it grew out of the ground and multiplied along the vista. Each room is generously sized with a private terrace, some with private jacuzzis, where guests can lay out and enjoy the truly breathtaking view. From someone who has lived in lower-level New York City apartments for many years, I am always a bit skeptical of people who live for a great view, but I get it now. Opening the villa door to an uninterrupted view of the sea and sky blending together is the ideal way to start the day.
The Mystique offers facilities to keep you entertained within the hotel, although it is also a quick 10-minute walk to the shops and restaurants of the coastal town of Oia. Guests can enjoy two pools with incredible views, the Elios Spa, and a fitness center, along with seven options of bars and restaurants.
On my first day I was able to experience the Elios Spa, located in a small intimate cove on the property. The offerings were lovely, and all organic, but I’m the type who, especially after a long trip, needs a bit of massage-beating to feel like it’s doing anything. Same with facials, I want it to be all about extractions instead of relaxation. But since relaxation was the aim of the game, it did exactly that, and my lovely masseuse was wonderful and left me feeling calm, lighter and polished.
Breakfast and lunch at Charisma was a highlight of my stay. All the food at the open-air restaurant was exceptional and fresh, and a much-needed break from the kilos of feta that I had inhaled at the previous islands. The mango and white peach smoothie with saffron and cumin was a breakfast stand-out, as well as the super food salad - avocado, grapes and goji berries - for lunch.
Later in the evening, I enjoyed the chef’s tasting at Lure Restaurant by Olivier Campanha, also on the property, which featured a Mediterranean-inspired gastronomical menu with an elevated view of the sunset. I recommend the Naked & Famous strawberry and mezcal cocktail, and the lamb saddle with green apple and wild asparagus.
Bottom Line: A perfect destination to visit with a loved one as the scenery and experience should be shared. You won't be too tempted to leave the property, but if you decide to venture to Oia, everything you need is within walking distance from Mystique.
