Salon 94 presents the solo debut exhibition of Justine Koons, marking a significant emergence after years of private studio practice. As both partner to renowned artist Jeff Koons and mother of six, Justine Koons maintains thoughtful and deliberate approaches to her practice since leaving Cape Town in 1995. Her work, which includes sculptural pieces like Cake, explores the intersection of personal mythology, domestic life, and public identity through richly decorated forms and layered references.
Drawing from her experience as both artist and curator, Koons creates work that functions as what she calls a "personal archaeology," incorporating elements from family life, cultural myths, and accumulated experiences. Her artistic practice, which gallery founder Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn describes as previously "secreted" and known only through whispers, includes clay sculptures adorned with carved replicas of toys, cookies, and beads. This exhibition represents the public unveiling of an artist who has chosen to develop her voice privately, creating work that navigates the delicate balance between interior life and public projection, between personal narrative and universal myth.
