Milestones in Contemporary Design 2020–2021

The exhibition in the White Hall and White Box presents the 76 best products of 2020 - the current milestones in international product design, selected by an international jury in the 51 categories of the competition. They fulfil the four qualities of good design, the quality of function, use, seduction and responsibility. These products set new standards in their respective industries and clearly stand out from the competition in terms of function and aesthetics through their innovative power and design. These four qualities are illustrated with each product by means of an information graphic.

About

Red Dot Design Museum Essen

From robots, coffee machines and furniture to a gyrocopter hanging from the ceiling: over five floors and 4,000 square meters, the museum exclusively presents products that have been awarded by an international jury of experts in one of the world's largest design competitions - the Red Dot Design Award. Thematic special exhibitions complement the inspiring insight into the world of design. The Red Dot Design Museum Essen is defined by its contrast of old and new, of industrial architecture and product culture. Built between 1928 and 1929 by the architects Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer, the former boiler house served as the power house of the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex for many years. Closed down in 1986, it is one of the most important industrial monuments of the 20th century and was declared a World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO in 2001. In the mid-1990s, British architect Norman Foster rebuilt the house for its new purpose as Red Dot Design Museum. The new interior architecture in glass and concrete merged with the old pipework, fittings and steel staircases and thus created a breathtaking, yet inspiring stage for contemporary product design.
