Nothing to See Here

On May 20th, 2023, Gustavo Barroso shares Nothing to See Here at KidSuper Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The show is the Brooklyn-based artist’s first solo exhibition and KidSuper Gallery’s inaugural showcase, which is set to officially launch in Fall 2023. Nothing to See Here’s opening reception, which will be presented by Jägermeister, will take place on the evening of May 20th, 2023 (from 6-9pm). The exhibition will remain open to the public until May 31st, 2023 by appointment only. In Nothing to See Here, Barroso invites the viewer into two realms he constantly finds himself at odds with, yet in necessary coexistence with each other: Imagination and reality. Ten new works will be on display. Three chairs and two sculptures. Supplementing these pieces are six paintings from Barroso’s ‘Purpose Paintings’ series. The installation of these pieces together represent the tension between imagination and reality. The former is fun and playful, while the latter is overwhelming and paralyzing. One is an art practice and the other is a means to practice his art. One calls its home a vibrant art studio, the other is just a messy home. We start with Barroso’s imagination.. a boundless place where the absurd and radical meet. He presents three plush works: the ‘Carrots Chaise’, the ‘Orlando Chair’, and the ‘Sad Chair’. Each furniture piece celebrates an impression left by pop culture and iconography upon his subconscious. The result is a new take on radical design. By process, Barroso brings his chairs to life through virtual reality sculpting and traditional upholstery craft.
